Brian Herrera, a Chicago Math and Science Academy former student, became a Dreamer when he graduated from high school. However, he still couldn’t receive state and federal financial aid and could only afford to attend a community college. Brian was frustrated by the lack of resources and financial support in his quest to get a degree.
According to Inside Higher Ed, 2% of college students are undocumented as of early 2020. While this seems like a small statistic, many of these students may not know about certain resources that will help them to secure a successful future.
On January 29, 2021 Brian gave a virtual informational presentation on Zoom to seventeen students and high school counselors on TheDream.US scholarship. The National Scholarship Award is a great opportunity for DACA recipients to cover tuition and fees that come with pursuing a college degree. There are partner colleges all over the US that support this scholarship and its recipients.

Brian Herrera, a CMSA alumnus, graduated from National Louis University with a bachelor’s degree in applied behavioral science in order to focus on helping and empowering communities across Illinois. His current work in the legal field has allowed him to reach diverse populations and inform them of resources available to them. Brian has been featured on media outlets like Univision, The Herald News, The Chicago Tribune, and The Patch inspiring and promoting college access to first-generation, low-income, minority, undocumented, LGBTQ, or non-native speakers of English. Brian hopes to inspire the next generation of young people to become trailblazers and never give up on their dreams by getting an education. |
