Future Institute Road-to-Success Mentorship (FIRM) Program

How the program works

The purpose of FIRM is to pair Future Leader Initiative (FLI) participants (current college students) with experienced professionals in their desired career field to help them set and achieve their career goals through real-world opportunities.

The mentorship process is completed by scheduling and completing eight (8) meetings (consultations) throughout the school year (September to May) on the MyFuture Portal. This portal allows mentors and mentees to connect virtually with a phone or computer.

Please note: If your meetings are not logged into the system, there is no proof of completing the program areas and the mentee will not qualify for their scholarship.

Completing FIRM Consultations

How to use the MyFuture Portal

Completing FIRM Consultations are how you will record your meetings for FIRM. A consultation is a meeting over the portal between a mentee and a mentor, which can be done on your mobile phone or on your computer.

PLEASE NOTE: The mentee must schedule a consultation with the mentor. A mentor cannot initiate scheduling a meeting with a mentor.

When a mentee requests a consultation, the mentor will receive an email notification (or text message if signed up). There is a time limit for the mentor to respond by accepting a requested time or proposing a new time for the consultation. The mentee and mentor have the ability to message one another on the portal to coordinate the consultation as well.

Once your consultation is confirmed and both mentee and mentor have accepted the time, you can log into the MyFuture Platform 10 minutes before your scheduled consultation and it will be counting down to your consultation start time (Image 3). You can adjust the audio and video settings depending on if you’re on your mobile device, computer, or a regular phone (Image 4).

Once your allotted time has ended, the you will both end the consultation. The screen will prompt you to rate and make comments about the consultation. After this, your consultation will be recorded in the system.

MENTORS:
Please be sure that under the section “How I can help” in your profile that you have selected the option under the Future Leaders Initiative category called “FIRM Mentor Meeting.”
In order to change this, go to the drop-down arrow at the top right of your dashboard screen, the option above the “Logout” option, select “How I can help.” (Image 2)

IN-PERSON MEETINGS – If mentees and mentors are able to meet in person, they must still schedule and complete the consultation on the portal. While this may seem inconvenient, the program coordinators need to be able to track activity on the portal and the only way to do that is tracking by completed consultations.

In order to use the system while meeting in person, please log into the portal on your phones or laptops and start the consultation at the appointed time. Turn the sound off on the device you are using and complete your meeting in person while the consultation is running. After your meeting concludes, please follow the same instructions as if you were meeting virtually on the platform.
